Vela Miles

Origin Story

Nobody remembers exactly how it happened.

That's very on-brand for us.

What we know is this: someone said something stupid during the event. Not unusual — we move fast, stakes are high, and in the events industry patience for nonsense has a very short shelf life.

Someone got an earful. The kind that only happens when you're surrounded by people who have seen too much, fixed too many last-minute disasters, and genuinely cannot believe you just said that.

And somewhere in that room, with several very tired, very experienced brains present, the word VelaMiles was born.

Do good work, earn them.

Do something stupid, lose them.

Get on the receiving end of The Look? You were definitely collecting.

“You long time never kena scolded ah?”

“You collecting velamiles again?”

For the uninitiated: kena is Singlish for receiving something you brought entirely upon yourself. In events, it means you opened your mouth before thinking. Usually at speed. Usually at the worst possible moment.

This recording of experience, it's not just events. Just because the founding team are events peeps, doesn't mean we don't understand your pain.

We've all been around the tables. We have friends and partners in creative agencies, production houses, PR firms. The story is the same. The chaos might just be slightly different.

The client who changed the brief. The budget that got cut after the concept was approved. The campaign that launched without crediting the team that built it. The last minute changes as the deadline looms over us all.

We are all cousins from the same problem. And this site is the family reunion nobody planned, but one we all need.

We do this all the time. We just don't always get credit for it.

A group of us once submitted a pitch. Combined experience in that room: somewhere between 60 and 70 years. We didn't get the job. Apparently we weren't experienced enough.

So we built a place where experience is on the record. Permanently. Where the internet — not the client — decides who actually knows what they're doing.

VelaMiles evolved the same way everything we build does.

Nobody planned it. Nobody owns it. It just became the language of the room.

On redemption

Someone once asked if VelaMiles could be redeemed for Coke.

The answer was: “Huh? Redeem? Okay la.”

And somehow that became a website.
